Legal Advice vs. Legal Information

Clerk’s Office staff may assist you with some of your inquiries, but they are unable to provide you with any form of legal advice. In general, legal advice is advice about what the law is; how to succeed in your case; or how to interpret the Constitution, statutes, rules or other sources of law.  More specifically, Clerk’s Office staff are not permitted to:

•    Make recommendations or suggest ways to help you win your case.
•    Fill out or correct any forms for you.
•    Advise you on the next form or filing you should effect.
•    Predict how or when a judge may decide any issue.
•    Interpret the meaning of any judicial order.
•    Calculate response times or certain deadlines.
•    Let you speak to a judge outside of a court hearing.
•    Give you free copies of documents from your case.
•    Conduct legal research for you.

Clerk’s Office staff may only provide assistance/information such as:

•    Answering general questions about how the Court works, its practices and procedures.
•    Referring you to Local and Federal Rules as well as available court forms.
•    Providing general information from your case, such as informing you of certain deadlines or if an Order has been issued.
