Appointment of Shane Moore as New Chief U.S. Probation and Pretrial Officer
After a national search, the judges of the Eastern District of Washington are pleased to announce the selection of Shane Moore, current Supervisory U.S. Probation Officer, who will succeed Matthew L. Thompson as the next Chief U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services Officer for the District. Officer Moore will take the oath of office at a ceremony to be held on December 1, 2025, in the Thomas Foley U.S. Courthouse in Spokane Washington.
Officer Moore brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served in three judicial districts. He began his career with the United States District Court in the Eastern District of Washington as a summer intern and volunteer. After college, he joined the District of Idaho first as an Officer Assistant in June 2003, then quickly became an Officer in May 2004. In August 2005, Officer Moore joined the Northern District of Iowa, serving as an Officer, Safety Instructor, and Guideline Specialist/Officer in Charge until he moved to the Eastern District of Washington in 2012. Here in the District, Officer Moore has served as an officer in both the Supervision and Presentence Units, before becoming the Presentence/Pretrial Investigations Supervisor in July 2014.
Serving with distinction on the national level, as well, Officer Moore was an integral member of the Presentence Working Group – Criminal Law and Policy Division of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts from May 2021-December 2024.
Office Moore holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and Sociology and an Executive Master of Public Administration, both from the University of South Dakota. He has also completed both the New Supervisor and Advanced Supervisor programs with the Federal Judicial Center.
