Ninth Circuit Lawyer Representative’s Duties

  • Serve as a member of the District's Attorney Advisory Committee
  • Attend the district meeting, which is held annually in September;
  • Attend all joint meetings between lawyers and judges, which are held periodically throughout the year;
  • Attend the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference, which is held annually in the summer;
  • Prepare and Submit an annual report for the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference on updates within the Eastern District (Lawyer Representative chairs/co-chairs only);
  • Attend the Chief Judge's Conference, which is held annually (Lawyer Representative chairs/co-chairs only);
  • Plan the district dinner, which is an event held during the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference where judges, lawyer representatives, and other members of the Eastern District and Western District bars get together for dinner (Lawyer Representative chairs/co-chairs only);
  • Participate in regular conference calls and in-person meetings (which are usually held in San Francisco) of the Lawyer Representative Coordinating Committee (Lawyer Representative chairs/co-chairs only);
  • Vote in all elections during the judicial conference, including voting on any and all resolutions;
  • Educate members of the Eastern District bar about the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference; and perhaps most importantly
  • Act as a conduit between the bench and the bar: listen to comments and questions from members of the Eastern District bar about Local Rules, courtroom practice and procedure, and any other concerns about practicing in federal court, and relay those concerns to the judges of the Eastern District.
