Summons Jury Service
Welcome to Jury Service for the Eastern District of Washington.
You have been randomly selected for potential service as a Petit (Trial) Juror for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Washington. All citizens residing within the Eastern District of Washington have the opportunity to be considered for service on grand and petit juries, and share the responsibility to serve when summoned.
Petit jury proceedings are held in Spokane, Yakima, and Richland:
- Residents of Adams, Asotin, Chelan, Columbia, Douglas, Ferry, Garfield, Grant, Lincoln, Okanogan, Pend Oreille, Spokane, Stevens, and Whitman counties report to Spokane.
- Residents of Benton, Franklin, Kittitas, Klickitat, Walla Walla, and Yakima counties are part of a shared Yakima/Richland jury division and may be required to report to either Yakima or Richland, depending on trial needs. Reporting location is not based on proximity to residence.
A petit (trial) jury hears evidence in court to determine the facts of a case and render a verdict in civil or criminal trials. Jurors listen to testimony, evaluate evidence, and apply the law as instructed by the judge. Petit jurors serve a two-week “on-call” term under a “one day or one trial” policy. During this period, you will not be required to report more than once unless you are selected for a trial or jury selection is ongoing.
If you are selected for a trial, you must serve until it concludes, even if it extends beyond your two-week term. Once your trial is complete, you will be excused for the remainder of your service. The Court reserves the right to modify these procedures when necessary in the interest of justice.
You may review the Handbook for Trial Jurors to familiarize yourself with the role and responsibilities of a trial juror, as well as the importance of this service.
